ChatGPT has added a great new feature, and it’s one I know I’ll be using a lot

Conversational branching means you can try out multiple ideas without losing the original thread of your discussion.

ChatGPT Gets Conversational Branching — Explore Multiple Ideas Without Losing Your Place

OpenAI has introduced a highly requested feature to ChatGPT: conversational branching. This new capability allows users to explore alternate directions in a conversation without overwriting or derailing the original thread.

✨ What is Conversational Branching?

Think of it like saying, “Let’s put a pin in that and circle back later” — except now, you can do it with AI. With branching, you can:

  • Go off on a tangent without losing progress.
  • Explore “what if” scenarios or alternative ideas.
  • Revisit and branch from any previous message, creating a parallel thread from that point onward.

🛠️ How It Works:

  1. Hover over a message from ChatGPT you want to branch from.
  2. Click on the three dots (•••) to open “More Options.”
  3. Select “Branch in a new chat.”
  4. A new conversation will open, including all messages up to that point, letting you take things in a new direction.

This update is particularly helpful for:

  • Writers testing story ideas
  • Coders exploring multiple solutions
  • Anyone who wants to experiment without losing their train of thought
