Google has announced the expansion of its AI-powered Search feature, AI Mode, to support five new languages: Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese. Previously limited to English since its initial launch, this update significantly broadens access to users around the world.
“With this expansion, more people can now use AI Mode to ask complex questions in their preferred language, while exploring the web more deeply,” said Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management at Google Search.
Originally introduced in March for Google One AI Premium users, AI Mode is powered by Gemini 2.5, integrating multimodal and advanced reasoning capabilities. Google is positioning AI Mode as its response to emerging AI search platforms like Perplexity and ChatGPT Search.
In August, Google began testing agentic features, allowing users to make restaurant reservations through AI Mode. Future updates are expected to include local services and ticket booking capabilities — currently available only to AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., at a cost of $249.99/month.
AI Mode is accessible via a dedicated tab in search results and a search bar button. Google is reportedly working to make this AI-first experience the default soon, as hinted by Logan Kilpatrick from Google DeepMind.
Despite the innovation, Google’s AI search features — including AI Overviews — have drawn criticism for reducing traditional website traffic and click-through rates.
